Pebble 301BL

Configuration

  • CPU: Cortex M3, up to 80 MHz
  • RAM: 512 KB (on chip)
  • Display: transflective black and white LCD, 144 x 168 pixels, with backlight
  • Sensors: accelerometer, compass, ambient light sensor
  • 5 ATM water resistant case

Rarity

This is an original Pebble from their first Kickstarter campaign. According to the campaign page, the backers placed orders for about 85,000 Pebbles.

Trivia

  • Although the display looks like an ePaper, it’s actually a super-low-power, high-contrast “memory LCD” produced by Sharp.
  • Some German customs offices originally refused the import, leaving the only choice of sending the watch back to China or having it destroyed. The reason was that there was no model number printed on the watch case, so it was not possible to match the import documents to the device. Pebble quickly solved the problem by printing a model number on later production batches.
  • Pebble filed for insolvency in December 2017. Fitbit acquired parts of the company, and kept the Pebble servers running until June 2018. The Pebble watches can still be used today though, thanks to the Rebble open source project that is run by enthusiasts.
  • I still own the full set, with charging cable and original box. The only thing I misplaced is the original watchstrap.

Known Issues

  • The battery does not charge. Unfortunately the Kickstarter models have no screws, but are held together by a lot of glue. It is not possible to open the case without breaking the watch, so it cannot be repaired.
  • Display glass has a few micro scratches (polishing it might remove anti-glare coating)
  • Original watchstrap is missing
